While this is a convenient method to attempt to treat the problem, it has created issues with patients getting treated with the wrong drug and worsening the problem of antibiotic resistance. Also, with the advent of telemedicine, where patients are able to video chat with a provider and receive a prescription without proper lab testing, this drug resistance problem will escalate. Bottom line: if you frequently have UTIs — please make sure you are having proper lab testing to prevent developing resistance to antibiotics.

What the reporting found

The Times investigation reported that UTIs, which afflict millions of Americans a year — mostly women — are increasingly resistant to the standard antibiotics that once cured them quickly. Research cited in the article found that a third of uncomplicated UTIs caused by E. coli, the most common cause, were resistant to one of the most widely used drugs, and at least a fifth were resistant to several other common treatments. Some infections now require hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics.

The article also noted that healthy women are the group most at risk from drug-resistant UTI germs, that overuse of antibiotics in people and livestock is driving the resistance, and that researchers are studying poultry as one path by which resistant E. coli strains reach people. Experts quoted in the piece called for more judicious antibiotic use and for quick, affordable urine-culture diagnostics so doctors can prescribe the right drug the first time.

Our takeaway for patients

If you have UTI symptoms — especially if they are frequent or a previous antibiotic didn’t work — see your GYN doctor and ask about a urine culture before starting treatment. A culture identifies which antibiotic your infection is actually susceptible to, protects you from days of ineffective treatment, and helps slow antibiotic resistance for everyone. The science also does not support popular remedies like cranberry juice or cranberry pills as a cure.

If you have any questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact our GYN Clinic at (757) 312-8221.

A Gynecology Specialists note: A New York Times health article by Matt Richtel emphasizes the problem of bacteria responsible for urinary tract infections becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics.
