However, many of these products are still full of sugar and carbs and, in fact, are unknowingly causing weight gain instead of weight loss. Understanding the different types of fats will help you make healthier choices. If you have any questions, please call our GYN Clinic at (757) 312-8221.

The Mayo Clinic has published an excellent guide on dietary fats that we recommend to our patients. Here are the key takeaways:

You don’t need to eliminate all fat from your diet — some fats actually support good health, and your body needs healthy fats to absorb certain vitamins and function normally. The goal is choosing the healthier types and enjoying them in moderation.

Fats to limit or avoid: Saturated fat (found mainly in red meat, poultry and full-fat dairy) raises LDL cholesterol and can increase cardiovascular and type 2 diabetes risk. Trans fat (mostly created through partial hydrogenation in processed foods) raises unhealthy LDL while lowering healthy HDL cholesterol. Check labels for “partially hydrogenated” ingredients.

Healthier fats to choose: Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats — found in olive, canola, safflower, peanut and corn oils, nuts, and seeds — improve blood cholesterol levels and may benefit blood sugar control. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish like salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel, sardines and herring, appear to decrease the risk of coronary artery disease.

Practical swaps: Sauté with olive oil instead of butter, bake with canola oil, prepare fish instead of meat at least twice a week, choose lean meats and skinless poultry, and snack on whole fruits and vegetables instead of processed snack foods. Remember that all fats — even healthy ones — are high in calories, so use them in place of other fats, not in addition to them.

For the complete article, visit the Mayo Clinic’s website at mayoclinic.org and search for “Dietary fats: Know which types to choose.”

Please contact our GYN Clinic at (757) 312-8221 if you have any questions about your health.

A Gynecology Specialists note: Many women in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and throughout Hampton Roads think that eating “low fat” or “fat free” foods is the right choice.
